UCLA’s Cody Riley, Jalen Hill will remain suspended throughout season

The two UCLA men’s basketball players who allegedly shoplifted in China alongside LiAngelo Ball will remain suspended throughout the current season, the school announced on Friday.

Cody Riley, Jalen Hill and Ball were detained by Chinese authorities in November before they gained their release. All three were suspended indefinitely, although Ball withdrew from the school earlier this month. His father, LaVar Ball, announced LiAngelo and the youngest Ball son, LaMelo, signed with a professional club in Lithuania.

UCLA said in a news release to USA TODAY Sports and other outlets that the decision to suspend Riley and Hill for the duration of the 2017-18 season was reached “in conjunction with any disciplinary decision rendered by the University’s Office of Student Conduct.”

“Cody and Jalen are a part of our basketball and university families, and we will continue to support them as they serve their suspensions,” UCLA coach Steve Alford said in a statement. “Since returning from China, they have done everything asked of them and continued to work hard in the classroom and in their own personal workouts.

“I’ve told our players all along that actions have consequences, and the season-long suspension shows how seriously we take their misconduct. Though they will not suit up for games or travel with the team, I look forward to their return after the Christmas holiday. I am confident that they will make significant contributions to the university moving forward.”
