Joost ‘didn’t want to go to cops’ after alleged poisoning

Pretoria – Rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen decided not to contact police after he was allegedly poisoned, Netwerk24 reports.

Odette Schwegler, spokesperson for the Van der Westhuizen family, said on Friday that Joost was admitted to ICU twice in 2014 because he showed symptoms of organophosphate poisoning.

He was suffering from motor neuron disease and died in February this year.

When asked why they never contacted police, the Van der Westhuizens said via Schwegler that Joost did not want to pursue the matter.

Huisgenoot reports in its 31 August edition that Pieter van der Westhuizen allegedly had to take his brother to hospital twice after he was allegedly poisoned.

Schwegler said the family still did not want to lay a charge.

Sean Hefferman, the lawyer for Joost’s estranged wife Amor Vittone, said they would not comment.

In his book In die skadu van ’n legende (In the shadow of a legend), Pieter van der Westhuizen writes that large amounts of organophosphates were found in Joost’s blood.

He said the family looked at both cases and decided not to let Joost go out without a caregiver again, Huisgenoot reported.
