MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte’s common-law wife Honeylet Avanceña has admitted to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City on Thursday due to high blood sugar levels, a hospital official said.
Marilen Lagniton, vice president for communication of St. Luke’s Medical Center, told the Inquirer by phone that , Honeylet 47, has been confined in one of the hospital rooms for blood sugar tests.
“According to Honeylet’s doctor, Dr. Edward Lim, they are just controlling her blood sugar levels,” Lagniton said.
Special Assistant to the President/Presidential Management Staff chief Christopher Go, earlier said the first lady was scheduled for a regular checkup as “old folks” usually do.
Dr. Lim said Honeylet was diagnosed with high blood sugar levels and has been asked to stay longer for more tests. He said she is expected to leave the hospital Sunday. “Nothing serious,” Lim said.
A former nurse, Avanceña who spent four years working as a health professional in the US until 2004, when she returned to Davao after giving birth to Veronica is said to be recuperating, according to statement released by office of the president.
Although Honeylet and Duterte are not legally married, Duterte, she says, was her first serious relationship, although she was hazy on how and when their romance began. Duterte’s first marriage ended in annulment in 1998.
